Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly do you do?
I help commercial photographers refine their portfolios, clarify their positioning, and develop marketing strategies that attract more aligned clients and projects.
Why should I hire a photography consultant?
As photographers, you’re often too close to your own work to evaluate it objectively. A photography consultant provides an outside perspective, helping identify opportunities, weaknesses, blind spots, and areas for growth. Whether you're struggling to attract the right clients, refine your portfolio, or market your business effectively, working with a consultant can help you make decisions more confidently and move forward with a clear plan.
Who do you work with?
Primarily commercial photographers, including those specializing in lifestyle, food and beverage, interiors, hospitality, industrial, healthcare, education, editorial, and other commercial niches. I also occasionally work with agents, stylists, and other creative professionals.
How is this different from a portfolio review?
A portfolio review focuses on the work itself. My consulting goes further by looking at how your portfolio, website, positioning, messaging, and marketing all work together. Great images alone don't always lead to bookings, and my goal is to help bridge that gap.
What services do you offer?
Portfolio editing
Website reviews and audits
Positioning and brand development
Marketing consulting
SEO guidance
Email marketing strategy
LinkedIn and social media strategy

How does the process work?
All clients begin with an introductory call. From there, we determine the areas that need attention and build a plan. For many photographers, the process starts with portfolio and website refinement before moving into marketing and business development.
Do I need to be an established photographer to work with you?
No. I work with photographers at many stages of their careers, from those building their first commercial portfolio to established photographers looking to reposition themselves, attract different clients, or grow their businesses.
Will you tell me what images to remove from my portfolio?
Yes. One of the most valuable parts of the process is objective editing. I'll help identify which images strengthen your presentation, which are hurting it, and what's missing.
Can you help if I'm not getting inquiries?
Yes. Often the issue isn't the quality of the work but how it's being presented, positioned, or marketed. We'll identify where the disconnect is and create a plan to address it.
Can you help with marketing?
Yes. Marketing is a major part of my consulting work. This may include email outreach, newsletters, LinkedIn, SEO, networking, portfolio reviews, industry events, and other strategies appropriate for your goals.
Do you manage marketing for photographers?
I provide strategic guidance, feedback, and accountability, but I am not currently a full-service marketing agency. My role is to help you develop an effective marketing plan and implement it successfully.
Can you help with SEO?
Yes. I regularly advise photographers on SEO, website structure, content strategy, and other ways to improve visibility in search results.
Can you help me define my niche?
Yes. Many photographers come to me because their work is strong but their positioning is unclear. Together we'll identify your strengths, target audience, and market opportunities so your portfolio and marketing feel more focused.
Can you help photographers prepare for portfolio reviews?
Yes. I help photographers determine which work to show, how to present it, what questions to ask, and how to follow up afterward.
How long do clients typically work with you?
It depends on the project. Some photographers book a single portfolio review or website audit, while others work with me over several months or years as we refine their portfolio, positioning, and marketing strategy.
Do you offer ongoing consulting?
Yes. Many clients continue working with me after their initial project for ongoing support, accountability, and strategy.
What results can I expect?
Every business is different, but most clients leave with:
A stronger portfolio
Clearer positioning
A more effective website
Better marketing direction
Increased confidence in presenting their work
A practical plan for attracting future clients
Do you guarantee bookings?
No. No consultant can guarantee bookings. What I can do is help ensure your portfolio, positioning, and marketing are aligned so you're putting your best foot forward and understand the active steps you need to take to bring in the clients and projects you want.
What types of photographers do you not work with?
My expertise is in commercial photography. While I occasionally work with photographers outside of that space, I am generally the best fit for photographers who are pursuing commercial assignments and looking to build relationships with brands, agencies, publications, and creative buyers.
Do you work with photographers outside the United States?
Yes. I work remotely and have worked with photographers from a variety of locations. As long as we can coordinate schedules, location is rarely a barrier.
Can we work together remotely?
Absolutely. Most consulting sessions are conducted remotely via video calls, allowing us to collaborate regardless of where you're based.
How much does consulting cost?
Pricing varies depending on the scope of the project. Some photographers need a focused portfolio review, while others are looking for a more comprehensive consulting engagement. Contact me to discuss your goals and I'll recommend the best fit.
What should I prepare before our first meeting?
The more information you can provide, the better. I typically recommend having your website, portfolio, marketing materials, social media profiles, and any specific goals or challenges ready to discuss.
Are you available for speaking engagements or workshops?
Yes. I regularly speak at conferences, industry events, portfolio review programs, educational organizations, and professional photography groups on topics including portfolio development, marketing, positioning, and business strategy for photographers.
Can you help me transition into commercial photography?
Yes. Many photographers come to me because they want to move from another specialty into commercial work. We can evaluate your existing portfolio, identify gaps, develop targeted projects, refine your positioning, and create a marketing plan to support that transition.
Can you review my marketing without reviewing my portfolio?
Yes. While portfolio presentation and marketing often influence one another, I also work with photographers who want feedback specifically on their marketing strategy, outreach efforts, website content, SEO, newsletters, LinkedIn presence, or social media approach.
How do I get started?
Schedule a consultation and we'll discuss your goals, challenges, and whether we're a good fit to work together.
